Many Caleres, Inc. (NYSE:CAL) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Caleres Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The insider, Mark Schmitt, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$753k worth of shares at a price of US$41.01 each. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. The good news is that this large sale was at well above current price of US$34.37. So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it.

Insider Ownership Of Caleres

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Caleres insiders own about US$44m worth of shares. That equates to 3.8% of the company. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
