Over the past year, many The Travelers Companies, Inc. (NYSE:TRV) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Travelers Companies

The Executive VP & President of Business Insurance, Gregory Toczydlowski, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$2.0m worth of shares at a price of US$215 each. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$221. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. We note that the biggest single sale was only 33% of Gregory Toczydlowski's holding.
