Getting In Cheap On Allegion Plc (NYSE:ALLE) Is Unlikely

アレジオン社(nyse:ALLE)に安く参入することは困難です。

When close to half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 17x, you may consider Allegion plc (NYSE:ALLE) as a stock to potentially avoid with its 20.6x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/E.

With its earnings growth in positive territory compared to the declining earnings of most other companies, Allegion has been doing quite well of late. It seems that many are expecting the company to continue defying the broader market adversity, which has increased investors' willingness to pay up for the stock. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

NYSE:ALLE Price to Earnings Ratio vs Industry July 19th 2024
Keen to find out how analysts think Allegion's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

How Is Allegion's Growth Trending?

Allegion's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow earnings per share by a handy 11% last year. This was backed up an excellent period prior to see EPS up by 35% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the eleven analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 12% each year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 10% per annum, which is not materially different.

In light of this, it's curious that Allegion's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly average growth expectations and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. Although, additional gains will be difficult to achieve as this level of earnings growth is likely to weigh down the share price eventually.

The Bottom Line On Allegion's P/E

Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

We've established that Allegion currently trades on a higher than expected P/E since its forecast growth is only in line with the wider market. When we see an average earnings outlook with market-like growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. This places shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.

It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with Allegion, and understanding should be part of your investment process.
