Star Shine Holdings Group Limited (HKG:1440) shares have had a horrible month, losing 26% after a relatively good period beforehand. Looking at the bigger picture, even after this poor month the stock is up 59% in the last year.

Even after such a large drop in price, you could still be forgiven for thinking Star Shine Holdings Group is a stock to steer clear of with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 10.6x, considering almost half the companies in Hong Kong's Luxury industry have P/S ratios below 0.7x. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

What Does Star Shine Holdings Group's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Star Shine Holdings Group certainly has been doing a great job lately as it's been growing its revenue at a really rapid pace. It seems that many are expecting the strong revenue performance to beat most other companies over the coming period, which has increased investors' willingness to pay up for the stock. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Star Shine Holdings Group's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Is There Enough Revenue Growth Forecasted For Star Shine Holdings Group?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Star Shine Holdings Group would need to produce outstanding growth that's well in excess of the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 137% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 60% overall rise in revenue, aided by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 12% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

In light of this, it's understandable that Star Shine Holdings Group's P/S sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong growth to continue and are willing to pay more for the stock.

The Final Word

Star Shine Holdings Group's shares may have suffered, but its P/S remains high. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

It's no surprise that Star Shine Holdings Group can support its high P/S given the strong revenue growth its experienced over the last three-year is superior to the current industry outlook. At this stage investors feel the potential continued revenue growth in the future is great enough to warrant an inflated P/S. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
