Possible Bearish Signals With Boston Beer Company Insiders Disposing Stock

The fact that multiple The Boston Beer Company, Inc. (NYSE:SAM) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Boston Beer Company Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The Founder, Samuel Calagione, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$9.7m worth of shares at a price of US$366 each. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. It's of some comfort that this sale was conducted at a price well above the current share price, which is US$279. So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it.
