Opendoor Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:OPEN) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 30% after a shaky period beforehand. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 41% over that time.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, Opendoor Technologies may still look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.3x, considering almost half of all companies in the Real Estate industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 2.4x and even P/S higher than 10x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.
How Has Opendoor Technologies Performed Recently?
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Opendoor Technologies' revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this poor revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is Opendoor Technologies' Revenue Growth Trending?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as Opendoor Technologies' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 63%. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow revenue by an impressive 141% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the twelve analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 27% per annum over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 12% each year growth forecast for the broader industry.
In light of this, it's peculiar that Opendoor Technologies' P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Key Takeaway
Even after such a strong price move, Opendoor Technologies' P/S still trails the rest of the industry. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
Opendoor Technologies' analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't contributing to its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. When we see strong growth forecasts like this, we can only assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/S ratio. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future revenues could see a lot of volatility.
