Quite a few insiders have dramatically grown their holdings in NextEra Energy, Inc. (NYSE:NEE) over the past 12 months. An insider's optimism about the company's prospects is a positive sign.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At NextEra Energy

The Independent Director Kirk Hachigian made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$1.1m worth of shares at a price of US$55.84 each. Although we like to see insider buying, we note that this large purchase was at significantly below the recent price of US$72.00. While it does suggest insiders consider the stock undervalued at lower prices, this transaction doesn't tell us much about what they think of current prices.

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It's great to see that NextEra Energy insiders own 0.2% of the company, worth about US$249m. Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.
