Viasat, Inc. (NASDAQ:VSAT) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 29% after a shaky period beforehand. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 43% in the last twelve months.
Although its price has surged higher, considering around half the companies operating in the United States' Communications industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 1x, you may still consider Viasat as an solid investment opportunity with its 0.5x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
How Has Viasat Performed Recently?
Viasat certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue more than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is low because investors think this strong revenue performance might be less impressive moving forward. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Viasat?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Viasat's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 68%. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 123% overall rise in revenue, aided by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 4.0% per year during the coming three years according to the nine analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 8.9% each year, which is noticeably more attractive.
In light of this, it's understandable that Viasat's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
What We Can Learn From Viasat's P/S?
Despite Viasat's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Viasat maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. Shareholders' pessimism on the revenue prospects for the company seems to be the main contributor to the depressed P/S. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
