There wouldn't be many who think Sinochem International Corporation's (SHSE:600500) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.3x is worth a mention when the median P/S for the Trade Distributors industry in China is similar at about 0.6x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

What Does Sinochem International's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Sinochem International has been struggling lately as its revenue has declined faster than most other companies. It might be that many expect the dismal revenue performance to revert back to industry averages soon, which has kept the P/S from falling. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think Sinochem International's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

How Is Sinochem International's Revenue Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like Sinochem International's is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 39%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 14% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the sole analyst covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 50% over the next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 18%, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Sinochem International's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. It may be that most investors aren't convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.

What We Can Learn From Sinochem International's P/S?

Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

Looking at Sinochem International's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't giving the boost to its P/S that we would've expected. There could be some risks that the market is pricing in, which is preventing the P/S ratio from matching the positive outlook. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued, but investors seem to think future revenue could see some volatility.
