We wouldn't blame Pure Storage, Inc. (NYSE:PSTG) shareholders if they were a little worried about the fact that John Colgrove, the Founder recently netted about US$6.0m selling shares at an average price of US$59.50. However, it's crucial to note that they remain very much invested in the stock and that sale only reduced their holding by 0.7%.

Pure Storage Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The Independent Vice Chairman, Scott Dietzen, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$7.9m worth of shares at a price of US$53.49 each. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$58.32, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. We note that the biggest single sale was only 15% of Scott Dietzen's holding.

Pure Storage insiders didn't buy any shares over the last year. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. Insider Ownership

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Pure Storage insiders own 5.4% of the company, currently worth about US$1.1b based on the recent share price. Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.

So What Do The Pure Storage Insider Transactions Indicate?

Insiders sold stock recently, but they haven't been buying. And even if we look at the last year, we didn't see any purchases. On the plus side, Pure Storage makes money, and is growing profits. It is good to see high insider ownership, but the insider selling leaves us cautious. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
