There's No Escaping RingCentral, Inc.'s (NYSE:RNG) Muted Revenues Despite A 26% Share Price Rise

リングセントラル社の( NYSE:RNG ) 株価上昇26%にもかかわらず、売上高は大幅に減少

Simply Wall St ·  07/26 06:31

RingCentral, Inc. (NYSE:RNG) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 26% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 12% over that time.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, RingCentral's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.4x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the wider Software industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 4.7x and even P/S above 11x are quite common. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does RingCentral's Recent Performance Look Like?

With revenue growth that's inferior to most other companies of late, RingCentral has been relatively sluggish. It seems that many are expecting the uninspiring revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the growth of the P/S ratio. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

How Is RingCentral's Revenue Growth Trending?

RingCentral's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 9.7%. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 78% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 7.9% each year as estimated by the analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 14% per annum, which is noticeably more attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that RingCentral's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

The Final Word

Shares in RingCentral have risen appreciably however, its P/S is still subdued. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

As expected, our analysis of RingCentral's analyst forecasts confirms that the company's underwhelming revenue outlook is a major contributor to its low P/S. Shareholders' pessimism on the revenue prospects for the company seems to be the main contributor to the depressed P/S. The company will need a change of fortune to justify the P/S rising higher in the future.
