U Mobile, in its drive to realise the full potential of 5G for various verticals, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC), one of the world's fastest-growing data centre colocation services providers. The collaboration will see U Mobile leveraging 5G's high-speed, low-latency connectivity, essential for edge computing and IoT (Internet of Things) devices, to enhance the functionality of STT GDC's data centres in the country. Additionally, the data centre's operations teams can benefit from 5G as an essential backup in the event of fibre network failures, facilitating robust disaster recovery for facilities management systems.

As part of the strategic partnership, U Mobile will collaborate with STT GDC on new use cases and joint customer innovation initiatives. 5G can support Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) applications that facilitate real-time monitoring, diagnostics, and autonomous operations for edge applications, which is attractive to customers of both companies.

"U Mobile is continuously seeking new innovative ways to reap the full potential of 5G in various verticals and is delighted to be able to partner with STT GDC to leverage on 5G technological capabilities to increase their data centres' efficiency and reliability. With this collaboration, we will also be able to witness how 5G is able to help optimise cost and efficiency for our customers. We believe the potential is huge and are keen to also explore different use cases with STT GDC as data centres will only grow in prominence as they are essential for Malaysia's digital economy for the storage, processing and managing of vast amounts of data," said Woon Ooi Yuen, Chief Technology Officer of U Mobile.

"This partnership demonstrates our commitment to providing high-performance data centre solutions that ensure reliability and operational excellence. Collaborating with U Mobile allows us to offer enhanced services for edge connectivity. By exploring new use cases and joint innovation initiatives, we aim to drive the future of data centre technology," said Dan Pointon, Group Chief Technology Officer, ST Telemedia Global Data Centres.

This collaboration underscores the growing importance of 5G technology in the digital economy and highlights the role of advanced data centres in supporting the increasing demand for data storage, processing, and management. The partnership between U Mobile and STT GDC is set to drive innovation and operational excellence in Malaysia's data centre landscape.
