What Does The Institutional Ownership Tell Us About Kingsoft?

Many institutions measure their performance against an index that approximates the local market. So they usually pay more attention to companies that are included in major indices.

Kingsoft already has institutions on the share registry. Indeed, they own a respectable stake in the company. This implies the analysts working for those institutions have looked at the stock and they like it. But just like anyone else, they could be wrong. Kingsoft is not owned by hedge funds. Because actions speak louder than words, we consider it a good sign when insiders own a significant stake in a company. In Kingsoft's case, its Top Key Executive, Jun Lei, is the largest shareholder, holding 13% of shares outstanding. Tencent Holdings Limited is the second largest shareholder owning 8.0% of common stock, and Pak Kwan Kau holds about 7.1% of the company stock. Interestingly, the third-largest shareholder, Pak Kwan Kau is also a Member of the Board of Directors, again, indicating strong insider ownership amongst the company's top shareholders.

A closer look at our ownership figures suggests that the top 11 shareholders have a combined ownership of 51% implying that no single shareholder has a majority.

The definition of an insider can differ slightly between different countries, but members of the board of directors always count. The company management answer to the board and the latter should represent the interests of shareholders. Notably, sometimes top-level managers are on the board themselves.

Most consider insider ownership a positive because it can indicate the board is well aligned with other shareholders. However, on some occasions too much power is concentrated within this group.

It seems insiders own a significant proportion of Kingsoft Corporation Limited. It has a market capitalization of just HK$29b, and insiders have HK$6.0b worth of shares in their own names.
