Despite an already strong run, Exagen Inc. (NASDAQ:XGN) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 38% in the last thirty days. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 12% over that time.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, Exagen may still look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.7x, considering almost half of all companies in the Biotechs industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 11x and even P/S higher than 61x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
What Does Exagen's Recent Performance Look Like?
Recent times haven't been great for Exagen as its revenue has been rising slower than most other companies. Perhaps the market is expecting the current trend of poor revenue growth to continue, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping revenue doesn't get any worse and that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?
Exagen's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 20% last year. The latest three year period has also seen a 30% overall rise in revenue, aided extensively by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been respectable for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the six analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 12% each year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 178% per year, which is noticeably more attractive.
With this information, we can see why Exagen is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
The Final Word
Shares in Exagen have risen appreciably however, its P/S is still subdued. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
We've established that Exagen maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. The company will need a change of fortune to justify the P/S rising higher in the future.
