The Fujian Tendering Co., Ltd. (SZSE:301136) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 26%. The bad news is that even after the stocks recovery in the last 30 days, shareholders are still underwater by about 6.8% over the last year.

Following the firm bounce in price, when almost half of the companies in China's Construction industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 1x, you may consider Fujian Tendering as a stock not worth researching with its 5.6x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

How Has Fujian Tendering Performed Recently?

As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Fujian Tendering over the last year, which is not ideal at all. One possibility is that the P/S is high because investors think the company will still do enough to outperform the broader industry in the near future. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

Although there are no analyst estimates available for Fujian Tendering, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.

How Is Fujian Tendering's Revenue Growth Trending?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the industry for P/S ratios like Fujian Tendering's to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 11% decrease to the company's top line. This has soured the latest three-year period, which nevertheless managed to deliver a decent 11% overall rise in revenue. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been mostly respectable for the company.

Comparing the recent medium-term revenue trends against the industry's one-year growth forecast of 13% shows it's noticeably less attractive.

With this in mind, we find it worrying that Fujian Tendering's P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.

The Final Word

Fujian Tendering's P/S has grown nicely over the last month thanks to a handy boost in the share price. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

Our examination of Fujian Tendering revealed its poor three-year revenue trends aren't detracting from the P/S as much as we though, given they look worse than current industry expectations. When we see slower than industry revenue growth but an elevated P/S, there's considerable risk of the share price declining, sending the P/S lower. Unless there is a significant improvement in the company's medium-term performance, it will be difficult to prevent the P/S ratio from declining to a more reasonable level.
