With a median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of close to 0.9x in the Food industry in the United States, you could be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Mission Produce, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:AVO) P/S ratio of 0.7x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

What Does Mission Produce's Recent Performance Look Like?

Mission Produce certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue more than most other companies. Perhaps the market is expecting this level of performance to taper off, keeping the P/S from soaring. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The P/S?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Mission Produce's to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 9.1% gain to the company's revenues. Revenue has also lifted 26% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been respectable for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 6.4% as estimated by the dual analysts watching the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 2.9% growth, that's a disappointing outcome.

With this in consideration, we think it doesn't make sense that Mission Produce's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. It seems most investors are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects, but the analyst cohort is not so confident this will happen. There's a good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the negative growth outlook.

The Final Word

While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

It appears that Mission Produce currently trades on a higher than expected P/S for a company whose revenues are forecast to decline. With this in mind, we don't feel the current P/S is justified as declining revenues are unlikely to support a more positive sentiment for long. If the poor revenue outlook tells us one thing, it's that these current price levels could be unsustainable.
