Those holding YaGuang Technology Group Company Limited (SZSE:300123) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 25% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 22% in the last twelve months.

Although its price has surged higher, YaGuang Technology Group's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 3.6x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the Aerospace & Defense industry in China, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 6.7x and even P/S above 11x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does YaGuang Technology Group's Recent Performance Look Like?

For example, consider that YaGuang Technology Group's financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. It might be that many expect the disappointing revenue performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/S. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as YaGuang Technology Group's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 14%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 14% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 28% shows it's an unpleasant look.

In light of this, it's understandable that YaGuang Technology Group's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

What We Can Learn From YaGuang Technology Group's P/S?

Despite YaGuang Technology Group's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our examination of YaGuang Technology Group confirms that the company's shrinking revenue over the past medium-term is a key factor in its low price-to-sales ratio, given the industry is projected to grow. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.

And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for YaGuang Technology Group (of which 1 can't be ignored!) you should know about.
