Designer Brands Inc.'s (NYSE:DBI) value has fallen 14% in the last week, but insiders who sold US$5.3m worth of stock over the last year have had less success. Given that the average selling price of US$11.95 is still lower than the current share price, insiders would probably have been better off keeping their shares.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.
The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Designer Brands
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the insider, William Jordan, for US$1.8m worth of shares, at about US$12.30 per share. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. It's of some comfort that this sale was conducted at a price well above the current share price, which is US$7.04. So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it.

Does Designer Brands Boast High Insider Ownership?
For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Designer Brands insiders own 25% of the company, currently worth about US$105m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
What Might The Insider Transactions At Designer Brands Tell Us?
The fact that there have been no Designer Brands insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us. It's heartening that insiders own plenty of stock, but we'd like to see more insider buying, since the last year of Designer Brands insider transactions don't fill us with confidence. In addition to knowing about insider transactions going on, it's beneficial to identify the risks facing Designer Brands.
