Some of the losses seen by insiders who purchased US$210.1k worth of Anywhere Real Estate Inc. (NYSE:HOUS) shares over the past year were recovered after the stock increased by 14% over the past week. The purchase, however, has proven to be a pricey bet, with losses currently totalling US$27k.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Anywhere Real Estate

The Independent Director Enrique Silva made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$81k worth of shares at a price of US$5.42 each. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being US$4.77). It's very possible they regret the purchase, but it's more likely they are bullish about the company. In our view, the price an insider pays for shares is very important. It is generally more encouraging if they paid above the current price, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels.

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
