It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. Sometimes these stories can cloud the minds of investors, leading them to invest with their emotions rather than on the merit of good company fundamentals. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.
So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Xcel Energy (NASDAQ:XEL). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.
How Fast Is Xcel Energy Growing?
If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price should eventually follow. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. We can see that in the last three years Xcel Energy grew its EPS by 4.3% per year. That might not be particularly high growth, but it does show that per-share earnings are moving steadily in the right direction.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. Xcel Energy's EBIT margins have actually improved by 3.8 percentage points in the last year, to reach 20%, but, on the flip side, revenue was down 9.6%. That's not a good look.
In the chart below, you can see how the company has grown earnings and revenue, over time. For finer detail, click on the image.
Fortunately, we've got access to analyst forecasts of Xcel Energy's future profits. You can do your own forecasts without looking, or you can take a peek at what the professionals are predicting.
Are Xcel Energy Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$33b company like Xcel Energy. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. To be specific, they have US$19m worth of shares. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. Even though that's only about 0.06% of the company, it's enough money to indicate alignment between the leaders of the business and ordinary shareholders.
Should You Add Xcel Energy To Your Watchlist?
As previously touched on, Xcel Energy is a growing business, which is encouraging. For those who are looking for a little more than this, the high level of insider ownership enhances our enthusiasm for this growth. That combination is very appealing. So yes, we do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on. It is worth noting though that we have found 2 warning signs for Xcel Energy (1 is a bit concerning!) that you need to take into consideration.
Although Xcel Energy certainly looks good, it may appeal to more investors if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see companies with more skin in the game, then check out this handpicked selection of companies that not only boast of strong growth but have strong insider backing.
