The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.
In contrast to all that, many investors prefer to focus on companies like Zhejiang HangminLtd (SHSE:600987), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.
How Fast Is Zhejiang HangminLtd Growing?
If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price should eventually follow. That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. We can see that in the last three years Zhejiang HangminLtd grew its EPS by 4.7% per year. That might not be particularly high growth, but it does show that per-share earnings are moving steadily in the right direction.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. EBIT margins for Zhejiang HangminLtd remained fairly unchanged over the last year, however the company should be pleased to report its revenue growth for the period of 7.2% to CN¥11b. That's progress.

While profitability drives the upside, prudent investors always check the balance sheet, too.
Are Zhejiang HangminLtd Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Prior to investment, it's always a good idea to check that the management team is paid reasonably. Pay levels around or below the median, can be a sign that shareholder interests are well considered. The median total compensation for CEOs of companies similar in size to Zhejiang HangminLtd, with market caps between CN¥2.9b and CN¥11b, is around CN¥1.1m.
The Zhejiang HangminLtd CEO received CN¥621k in compensation for the year ending December 2023. That seems pretty reasonable, especially given it's below the median for similar sized companies. While the level of CEO compensation shouldn't be the biggest factor in how the company is viewed, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. Generally, arguments can be made that reasonable pay levels attest to good decision-making.
Does Zhejiang HangminLtd Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
One important encouraging feature of Zhejiang HangminLtd is that it is growing profits. Not only that, but the CEO is paid quite reasonably, which should prompt investors to feel more trusting of the board of directors. So all in all Zhejiang HangminLtd is worthy at least considering for your watchlist. While we've looked at the quality of the earnings, we haven't yet done any work to value the stock. So if you like to buy cheap, you may want to check if Zhejiang HangminLtd is trading on a high P/E or a low P/E, relative to its industry.
