QuidelOrtho Corporation (NASDAQ:QDEL) Surges 26% Yet Its Low P/S Is No Reason For Excitement

クイデルオーソ株式会社(ナスダック:QDEL)は26%急増していますが、低いP/Sは興奮する理由にはなりません

QuidelOrtho Corporation (NASDAQ:QDEL) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 26% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 46% over that time.

Even after such a large jump in price, QuidelOrtho's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the wider Medical Equipment industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 3.2x and even P/S above 7x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

How QuidelOrtho Has Been Performing

QuidelOrtho hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. It seems that many are expecting the poor revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S ratio. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

How Is QuidelOrtho's Revenue Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, QuidelOrtho would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 10%. Even so, admirably revenue has lifted 54% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 2.4% as estimated by the six analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the broader industry is forecast to expand by 9.3%, which paints a poor picture.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that QuidelOrtho's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.

What We Can Learn From QuidelOrtho's P/S?

QuidelOrtho's recent share price jump still sees fails to bring its P/S alongside the industry median. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of QuidelOrtho's analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking revenue is contributing to its low P/S. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
