Capinfo Company Limited (HKG:1075) Not Doing Enough For Some Investors As Its Shares Slump 25%

首都信息公司有限公司(HKG:1075)对一些投资者来说做得不够,使其股价下跌25%。

The Capinfo Company Limited (HKG:1075) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 25%. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 43% in that time.

Since its price has dipped substantially, Capinfo may be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.3x, considering almost half of all companies in the IT industry in Hong Kong have P/S ratios greater than 0.8x and even P/S higher than 3x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does Capinfo's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

For example, consider that Capinfo's financial performance has been pretty ordinary lately as revenue growth is non-existent. It might be that many expect the uninspiring revenue performance to worsen, which has repressed the P/S. Those who are bullish on Capinfo will be hoping that this isn't the case, so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Capinfo?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Capinfo's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that there was hardly any revenue growth to speak of for the company over the past year. That's essentially a continuation of what we've seen over the last three years, as its revenue growth has been virtually non-existent for that entire period. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been satisfied with the complete absence of medium-term growth.

This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 14% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

With this in consideration, it's easy to understand why Capinfo's P/S falls short of the mark set by its industry peers. It seems most investors are expecting to see the recent limited growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

The Bottom Line On Capinfo's P/S

The southerly movements of Capinfo's shares means its P/S is now sitting at a pretty low level. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

Our examination of Capinfo confirms that the company's revenue trends over the past three-year years are a key factor in its low price-to-sales ratio, as we suspected, given they fall short of current industry expectations. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price experience a reversal of fortunes anytime soon.

You should always think about risks. Case in point, we've spotted 2 warning signs for Capinfo you should be aware of, and 1 of them makes us a bit uncomfortable.
