The fact that multiple Garmin Ltd. (NYSE:GRMN) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.
Garmin Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
In fact, the recent sale by Cheng Wei Wang was the biggest sale of Garmin shares made by an insider individual in the last twelve months, according to our records. That means that an insider was selling shares at below the current price (US$180). We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. It is worth noting that this sale was only 23% of Cheng Wei Wang's holding.

Insiders At Garmin Have Sold Stock Recently
The last quarter saw substantial insider selling of Garmin shares. In total, insider Cheng Wei Wang dumped US$1.8m worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. In light of this it's hard to argue that all the insiders think that the shares are a bargain.
Insider Ownership Of Garmin
For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It's great to see that Garmin insiders own 19% of the company, worth about US$6.6b. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
So What Do The Garmin Insider Transactions Indicate?
An insider sold Garmin shares recently, but they didn't buy any. And even if we look at the last year, we didn't see any purchases. But since Garmin is profitable and growing, we're not too worried by this. It is good to see high insider ownership, but the insider selling leaves us cautious. So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing. While conducting our analysis, we found that Garmin has 1 warning sign and it would be unwise to ignore this.
