There wouldn't be many who think Sonos, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:SONO) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.9x is worth a mention when the median P/S for the Consumer Durables industry in the United States is similar at about 0.8x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.
What Does Sonos' Recent Performance Look Like?
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Sonos' revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. It might be that many expect the dour revenue performance to strengthen positively, which has kept the P/S from falling. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Is There Some Revenue Growth Forecasted For Sonos?
The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like Sonos' is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 5.9%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 7.6% in total over the last three years. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the six analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 2.9% over the next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 5.5%, which is noticeably more attractive.
With this information, we find it interesting that Sonos is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently many investors in the company are less bearish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
What Does Sonos' P/S Mean For Investors?
Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
Given that Sonos' revenue growth projections are relatively subdued in comparison to the wider industry, it comes as a surprise to see it trading at its current P/S ratio. When we see companies with a relatively weaker revenue outlook compared to the industry, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the moderate P/S lower. Circumstances like this present a risk to current and prospective investors who may see share prices fall if the low revenue growth impacts the sentiment.
The company's balance sheet is another key area for risk analysis. You can assess many of the main risks through our free balance sheet analysis for Sonos with six simple checks.
