You may think that with a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 15x Impinj, Inc. (NASDAQ:PI) is a stock to avoid completely, seeing as almost half of all the Semiconductor companies in the United States have P/S ratios under 4.2x and even P/S lower than 1.8x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/S.
What Does Impinj's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
Impinj hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. Perhaps the market is expecting the poor revenue to reverse, justifying it's current high P/S.. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.
Keen to find out how analysts think Impinj's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.
What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/S?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as steep as Impinj's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry decidedly.
Taking a look back first, we see that there was hardly any revenue growth to speak of for the company over the past year. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 100% overall rise in revenue, in spite of its uninspiring short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders will be pleased, but also have some questions to ponder about the last 12 months.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the ten analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 25% per annum over the next three years. With the industry predicted to deliver 25% growth per year, the company is positioned for a comparable revenue result.
With this information, we find it interesting that Impinj is trading at a high P/S compared to the industry. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly average growth expectations and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. Although, additional gains will be difficult to achieve as this level of revenue growth is likely to weigh down the share price eventually.
The Final Word
We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
Seeing as its revenues are forecast to grow in line with the wider industry, it would appear that Impinj currently trades on a higher than expected P/S. The fact that the revenue figures aren't setting the world alight has us doubtful that the company's elevated P/S can be sustainable for the long term. Unless the company can jump ahead of the rest of the industry in the short-term, it'll be a challenge to maintain the share price at current levels.
You should always think about risks. Case in point, we've spotted 4 warning signs for Impinj you should be aware of.
