Pinning Down China Mobile Limited's (HKG:941) P/E Is Difficult Right Now

現在、中国移動有限公司(HKG:941)のP/E(株価収益率)を確定するのは困難です

Simply Wall St ·  18:35

It's not a stretch to say that China Mobile Limited's (HKG:941) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 10.3x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the market in Hong Kong, where the median P/E ratio is around 9x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/E.

Recent times have been advantageous for China Mobile as its earnings have been rising faster than most other companies. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to wane, which has kept the P/E from rising. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

Is There Some Growth For China Mobile?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, China Mobile would need to produce growth that's similar to the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 3.2% gain to the company's bottom line. The solid recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 17% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably been satisfied with the medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 3.6% per year as estimated by the analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 12% each year, which is noticeably more attractive.

With this information, we find it interesting that China Mobile is trading at a fairly similar P/E to the market. Apparently many investors in the company are less bearish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Maintaining these prices will be difficult to achieve as this level of earnings growth is likely to weigh down the shares eventually.

What We Can Learn From China Mobile's P/E?

It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've established that China Mobile currently trades on a higher than expected P/E since its forecast growth is lower than the wider market. Right now we are uncomfortable with the P/E as the predicted future earnings aren't likely to support a more positive sentiment for long. Unless these conditions improve, it's challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
