Many Henry Schein, Inc. (NASDAQ:HSIC) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Henry Schein

The insider, Bradford Connett, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$832k worth of shares at a price of US$74.02 each. So we know that an insider sold shares at around the present share price of US$68.81. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. In this case, the big sale took place at around the current price, so it's not too bad (but it's still not a positive).

Insider Ownership Of Henry Schein

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Henry Schein insiders own about US$112m worth of shares (which is 1.3% of the company). This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
