Investing in CNA Financial (NYSE:CNA) a Year Ago Would Have Delivered You a 35% Gain

On average, over time, stock markets tend to rise higher. This makes investing attractive. But if you choose that path, you're going to buy some stocks that fall short of the market. For example, the CNA Financial Corporation (NYSE:CNA), share price is up over the last year, but its gain of 25% trails the market return. Looking back further, the share price is 20% higher than it was three years ago.

With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During the last year CNA Financial grew its earnings per share (EPS) by 65%. It's fair to say that the share price gain of 25% did not keep pace with the EPS growth. Therefore, it seems the market isn't as excited about CNA Financial as it was before. This could be an opportunity. The caution is also evident in the lowish P/E ratio of 10.61.

The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for CNA Financial the TSR over the last 1 year was 35%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that CNA Financial shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 35% over the last year. That's including the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 8% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
