Many Utz Brands, Inc. (NYSE:UTZ) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Utz Brands Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the insider, Chinh Chu, sold US$6.1m worth of shares at a price of US$18.14 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$18.60. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. This single sale was just 9.2% of Chinh Chu's stake.

Happily, we note that in the last year insiders paid US$396k for 29.54k shares. On the other hand they divested 747.14k shares, for US$14m. All up, insiders sold more shares in Utz Brands than they bought, over the last year. Does Utz Brands Boast High Insider Ownership?

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It's great to see that Utz Brands insiders own 8.8% of the company, worth about US$228m. Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Utz Brands Insiders?

The recent insider purchases are heartening. However, the longer term transactions are not so encouraging. The high levels of insider ownership, and the recent buying by some insiders suggests they are well aligned and optimistic.
