Everbright Jiabao Co., Ltd. (SHSE:600622) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 37% after a shaky period beforehand. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 20% in the last twelve months.

Even after such a large jump in price, Everbright Jiabao's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.8x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the Real Estate industry in China, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 1.7x and even P/S above 4x are quite common. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has Everbright Jiabao Performed Recently?

Everbright Jiabao has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue at a solid pace. It might be that many expect the respectable revenue performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/S. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Everbright Jiabao's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

Everbright Jiabao's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 11% last year. Revenue has also lifted 19% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has actually done a good job of growing revenue over that time.

Comparing the recent medium-term revenue trends against the industry's one-year growth forecast of 11% shows it's noticeably less attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that Everbright Jiabao's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see the recent limited growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

The Final Word

Despite Everbright Jiabao's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

In line with expectations, Everbright Jiabao maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider industry forecast. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.

It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with Everbright Jiabao, and understanding these should be part of your investment process.
