ACM Research, Inc. (NASDAQ:ACMR) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 34% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Looking further back, the 18% rise over the last twelve months isn't too bad notwithstanding the strength over the last 30 days.
Although its price has surged higher, given about half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 19x, you may still consider ACM Research as an attractive investment with its 16.2x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.
With its earnings growth in positive territory compared to the declining earnings of most other companies, ACM Research has been doing quite well of late. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, possibly more than the market, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Is There Any Growth For ACM Research?
In order to justify its P/E ratio, ACM Research would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 24% gain to the company's bottom line. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 161% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the eight analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 16% each year over the next three years. With the market only predicted to deliver 10% each year, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
In light of this, it's peculiar that ACM Research's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Bottom Line On ACM Research's P/E
ACM Research's stock might have been given a solid boost, but its P/E certainly hasn't reached any great heights. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
Our examination of ACM Research's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. When we see a strong earnings outlook with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/E ratio. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.
It is also worth noting that we have found 3 warning signs for ACM Research (1 is potentially serious!) that you need to take into consideration.
