CNX Resources Corporation's (NYSE:CNX) Price Is Right But Growth Is Lacking After Shares Rocket 33%

CNXリソースコーポレーション(nyse:cnx)の株価は適切ですが、株式は33%急上昇した後に成長が不足しています。

CNX Resources Corporation (NYSE:CNX) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 33% share price jump in the last month. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 57%.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, CNX Resources' price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 10.5x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 19x and even P/E's above 35x are quite common. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

With earnings that are retreating more than the market's of late, CNX Resources has been very sluggish. It seems that many are expecting the dismal earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. If you still like the company, you'd want its earnings trajectory to turn around before making any decisions. If not, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the market for P/E ratios like CNX Resources' to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 70%. Unfortunately, that's brought it right back to where it started three years ago with EPS growth being virtually non-existent overall during that time. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the four analysts covering the company suggest earnings growth is heading into negative territory, declining 7.4% per annum over the next three years. Meanwhile, the broader market is forecast to expand by 10% per year, which paints a poor picture.

With this information, we are not surprised that CNX Resources is trading at a P/E lower than the market. However, shrinking earnings are unlikely to lead to a stable P/E over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.

The Final Word

CNX Resources' stock might have been given a solid boost, but its P/E certainly hasn't reached any great heights. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We've established that CNX Resources maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast for sliding earnings, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.

And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for CNX Resources (of which 1 is a bit unpleasant!) you should know about.
