Some Confidence Is Lacking In Verisk Analytics, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:VRSK) P/E

ヴェリスク・アナリティクス社(ナスダック:VRSK)のP/Eには自信がありません

Simply Wall St ·  10/18 07:55

Verisk Analytics, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:VRSK) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 42.4x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 18x and even P/E's below 10x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

With its earnings growth in positive territory compared to the declining earnings of most other companies, Verisk Analytics has been doing quite well of late. It seems that many are expecting the company to continue defying the broader market adversity, which has increased investors' willingness to pay up for the stock. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think Verisk Analytics' future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Is There Enough Growth For Verisk Analytics?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as Verisk Analytics' is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 22%. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 50% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 10% each year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 10% per annum, which is not materially different.

With this information, we find it interesting that Verisk Analytics is trading at a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently many investors in the company are more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Although, additional gains will be difficult to achieve as this level of earnings growth is likely to weigh down the share price eventually.

The Key Takeaway

Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We've established that Verisk Analytics currently trades on a higher than expected P/E since its forecast growth is only in line with the wider market. When we see an average earnings outlook with market-like growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. This places shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.

And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for Verisk Analytics you should know about.

Of course, you might find a fantastic investment by looking at a few good candidates. So take a peek at this free list of companies with a strong growth track record, trading on a low P/E.
