It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.

If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in PriceSmart (NASDAQ:PSMT). Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide PriceSmart with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.

How Fast Is PriceSmart Growing?

If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS) outcomes. Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. PriceSmart managed to grow EPS by 8.5% per year, over three years. That growth rate is fairly good, assuming the company can keep it up.

It's often helpful to take a look at earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. While we note PriceSmart achieved similar EBIT margins to last year, revenue grew by a solid 11% to US$4.8b. That's a real positive.

Are PriceSmart Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It should give investors a sense of security owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, creating a close alignment their interests. So it is good to see that PriceSmart insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. Notably, they have an enviable stake in the company, worth US$229m. Holders should find this level of insider commitment quite encouraging, since it would ensure that the leaders of the company would also experience their success, or failure, with the stock.

Should You Add PriceSmart To Your Watchlist?

One important encouraging feature of PriceSmart is that it is growing profits. If that's not enough on its own, there is also the rather notable levels of insider ownership. These two factors are a huge highlight for the company which should be a strong contender your watchlists. While we've looked at the quality of the earnings, we haven't yet done any work to value the stock. So if you like to buy cheap, you may want to check if PriceSmart is trading on a high P/E or a low P/E, relative to its industry.

Although PriceSmart certainly looks good, it may appeal to more investors if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see companies with more skin in the game, then check out this handpicked selection of companies that not only boast of strong growth but have strong insider backing.
