Ubisoft Entertainment SA (OTC:UBSFF) has officially released its first blockchain game, Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles.
The game, which is a tactical NFT battler, was announced last June and has now launched on PC. It features a free-to-start model, allowing players to engage in battles using unique figurines that can be purchased with in-game gold or cryptocurrency, Eurogamer reported.
These figurines, which are NFTs, range in price from $7 to $64,000.
Game Mechanics
Champions Tactics pits players against each other in turn-based battles using squads of three figurines. While players can participate without buying figurines, those who invest in NFTs may gain a competitive advantage. Each figurine has distinct stats, enabling players to create teams that fit their strategies.
Francois Bodson, studio director at Ubisoft Paris, explained the game's development approach. "The team inside the Ubisoft Paris studio developing Champions Tactics partnered with Ubisoft's Strategic Innovation Lab and Oasys to ensure that our use of blockchain was done in service of delivering new and innovative gaming experiences for our players."
He added that the game aims to enhance player ownership and empowerment, likening it to traditional trading card games. "Champions Tactics offers deep strategic gameplay featuring unique in-game assets and several exciting innovations," he said.
Rating And Industry Context
The game has received an Adults Only rating, which may relate to its blockchain elements and use of cryptocurrency. Ubisoft has not commented on this rating.
This launch follows Ubisoft's earlier attempt to introduce NFTs in gaming. In December 2021, the company launched its NFT platform, Quartz, with Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint as the first game to feature NFTs.
However, this initiative saw limited success, reportedly selling only 15 NFTs during its beta phase. Ubisoft's NFT executives argued that players simply "don't get it."
