Looking at Ingles Markets, Incorporated's (NASDAQ:IMKT.A ) insider transactions over the last year, we can see that insiders were net sellers. That is, there were more number of shares sold by insiders than there were purchased.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Ingles Markets

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Director, Laura Sharp, sold US$421k worth of shares at a price of US$70.25 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at around the current price of US$65.05. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. In this case, the big sale took place at around the current price, so it's not too bad (but it's still not a positive). The only individual insider seller over the last year was Laura Sharp.

Laura Sharp ditched 42.70k shares over the year. The average price per share was US$73.24. Does Ingles Markets Boast High Insider Ownership?

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It's great to see that Ingles Markets insiders own 22% of the company, worth about US$270m. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
