Recent 16% Pullback Isn't Enough to Hurt Long-term Winner Technology (SZSE:300609) Shareholders, They're Still up 83% Over 3 Years

The Winner Technology Co., Inc. (SZSE:300609) share price has had a bad week, falling 16%. But don't let that distract from the very nice return generated over three years. In fact, the company's share price bested the return of its market index in that time, posting a gain of 79%.

Although Winner Technology has shed CN¥668m from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.

Given that Winner Technology didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.

In the last 3 years Winner Technology saw its revenue shrink by 0.7% per year. Despite the lack of revenue growth, the stock has returned 21%, compound, over three years. Unless the company is going to make profits soon, we would be pretty cautious about it.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Winner Technology's TSR for the last 3 years was 83%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Winner Technology has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 26% in the last twelve months. Of course, that includes the dividend. There's no doubt those recent returns are much better than the TSR loss of 4% per year over five years. The long term loss makes us cautious, but the short term TSR gain certainly hints at a brighter future. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. For instance, we've identified 3 warning signs for Winner Technology that you should be aware of.
