Little Excitement Around Employers Holdings, Inc.'s (NYSE:EIG) Earnings

雇用主ホールディングス社(nyse:EIG)の収益についてはあまり興奮がない

Simply Wall St ·  11/07 23:57

With a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 9.8x Employers Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:EIG) may be sending bullish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios greater than 19x and even P/E's higher than 36x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Employers Holdings has been doing relatively well. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings performance might be less impressive moving forward. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

NYSE:EIG Price to Earnings Ratio vs Industry November 7th 2024
Keen to find out how analysts think Employers Holdings' future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Is There Any Growth For Employers Holdings?

Employers Holdings' P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 21% gain to the company's bottom line. EPS has also lifted 22% in aggregate from three years ago, mostly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has actually done a good job of growing earnings over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should bring diminished returns, with earnings decreasing 27% as estimated by the three analysts watching the company. That's not great when the rest of the market is expected to grow by 15%.

With this information, we are not surprised that Employers Holdings is trading at a P/E lower than the market. However, shrinking earnings are unlikely to lead to a stable P/E over the longer term. There's potential for the P/E to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its profitability.

The Bottom Line On Employers Holdings' P/E

Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

As we suspected, our examination of Employers Holdings' analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking earnings is contributing to its low P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.

It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with Employers Holdings, and understanding should be part of your investment process.
