PROS Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:PRO) Surges 30% Yet Its Low P/S Is No Reason For Excitement

PROS Holdings, Inc.(nyse:PRO)が30%急増しましたが、低いP/Sは興奮の理由にはなりません

Simply Wall St ·  11/08 20:09

PROS Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:PRO) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 30% after a shaky period beforehand. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 33% in the last twelve months.

Although its price has surged higher, PROS Holdings may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 3.4x, considering almost half of all companies in the Software industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 5x and even P/S higher than 13x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Has PROS Holdings Performed Recently?

PROS Holdings could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this lacklustre revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping revenue doesn't get any worse and that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For PROS Holdings?

PROS Holdings' P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 8.7% gain to the company's revenues. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 31% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenues over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the eight analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 9.4% over the next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 25%, which is noticeably more attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that PROS Holdings' P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

The Final Word

PROS Holdings' stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

We've established that PROS Holdings maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. The company will need a change of fortune to justify the P/S rising higher in the future.

It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with PROS Holdings (at least 1 which is potentially serious), and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
