Despite an already strong run, KINGSEMI Co., Ltd. (SHSE:688037) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 25% in the last thirty days. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 11% over that time.

Following the firm bounce in price, KINGSEMI's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 12.7x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to other companies in the Semiconductor industry in China, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios below 7.4x and even P/S below 3x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/S.

What Does KINGSEMI's Recent Performance Look Like?

KINGSEMI hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. It might be that many expect the dour revenue performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/S from collapsing. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the industry for P/S ratios like KINGSEMI's to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 4.7% decrease to the company's top line. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow revenue by an impressive 143% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would definitely welcome the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the five analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 58% over the next year. With the industry only predicted to deliver 42%, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.

With this information, we can see why KINGSEMI is trading at such a high P/S compared to the industry. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

What Does KINGSEMI's P/S Mean For Investors?

KINGSEMI's P/S has grown nicely over the last month thanks to a handy boost in the share price. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

As we suspected, our examination of KINGSEMI's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook is contributing to its high P/S. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident future revenues aren't under threat. Unless the analysts have really missed the mark, these strong revenue forecasts should keep the share price buoyant.
