AvePoint, Inc. (NASDAQ:AVPT) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 26% gain in the last month alone. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 92% in the last year.

Since its price has surged higher, AvePoint may be sending very bearish signals at the moment with a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 9.3x, since almost half of all companies in the Software industry in the United States have P/S ratios under 5.1x and even P/S lower than 1.9x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/S.

How Has AvePoint Performed Recently?

AvePoint certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue more than most other companies. The P/S is probably high because investors think this strong revenue performance will continue. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the industry for P/S ratios like AvePoint's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 21% last year. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 72% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 21% per year as estimated by the six analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be similar to the 20% each year growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that AvePoint's P/S is higher than its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.

What We Can Learn From AvePoint's P/S?

The strong share price surge has lead to AvePoint's P/S soaring as well. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

Seeing as its revenues are forecast to grow in line with the wider industry, it would appear that AvePoint currently trades on a higher than expected P/S. Right now we are uncomfortable with the relatively high share price as the predicted future revenues aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless the company can jump ahead of the rest of the industry in the short-term, it'll be a challenge to maintain the share price at current levels.
