The fact that multiple Evolus, Inc. (NASDAQ:EOLS) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Evolus Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the President, David Moatazedi, sold US$1.8m worth of shares at a price of US$12.73 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$13.12). We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. We note that the biggest single sale was 100% of David Moatazedi's holding.

Insiders At Evolus Have Sold Stock Recently

The last quarter saw substantial insider selling of Evolus shares. In total, insiders dumped US$138k worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. This may suggest that some insiders think that the shares are not cheap.

Does Evolus Boast High Insider Ownership?

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It appears that Evolus insiders own 2.0% of the company, worth about US$17m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

So What Do The Evolus Insider Transactions Indicate?

Insiders sold Evolus shares recently, but they didn't buy any. And even if we look at the last year, we didn't see any purchases. While insiders do own shares, they don't own a heap, and they have been selling. We'd practice some caution before buying! While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision. For example - Evolus has 2 warning signs we think you should be aware of.
