Despite an already strong run, NET263 Ltd. (SZSE:002467) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 26% in the last thirty days. While recent buyers may be laughing, long-term holders might not be as pleased since the recent gain only brings the stock back to where it started a year ago.

After such a large jump in price, given around half the companies in China's Telecom industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 3.9x, you may consider NET263 as a stock to avoid entirely with its 7.7x P/S ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/S.

What Does NET263's Recent Performance Look Like?

NET263 certainly has been doing a good job lately as its revenue growth has been positive while most other companies have been seeing their revenue go backwards. The P/S ratio is probably high because investors think the company will continue to navigate the broader industry headwinds better than most. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, NET263 would need to produce outstanding growth that's well in excess of the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue, the company posted a result that saw barely any deviation from a year ago. Likewise, not much has changed from three years ago as revenue have been stuck during that whole time. Therefore, it's fair to say that revenue growth has definitely eluded the company recently.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the one analyst covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 7.7% over the next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 5.0%, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this in mind, it's not hard to understand why NET263's P/S is high relative to its industry peers. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

What We Can Learn From NET263's P/S?

The strong share price surge has lead to NET263's P/S soaring as well. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that NET263 maintains its high P/S on the strength of its forecasted revenue growth being higher than the the rest of the Telecom industry, as expected.
