MYS Group Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002303) Shares Fly 25% But Investors Aren't Buying For Growth

MYS グループ株式会社 (SZSE:002303) の株価が25%上昇しましたが、投資家は成長を期待していません

MYS Group Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002303) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 25% gain in the last month alone. Looking further back, the 15% rise over the last twelve months isn't too bad notwithstanding the strength over the last 30 days.

Although its price has surged higher, MYS Group's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 25x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in China, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 35x and even P/E's above 69x are quite common. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

With earnings growth that's exceedingly strong of late, MYS Group has been doing very well. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the market for P/E ratios like MYS Group's to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 36% gain to the company's bottom line. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 113% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.

This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 39% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

In light of this, it's understandable that MYS Group's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the bourse.

The Bottom Line On MYS Group's P/E

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift MYS Group's P/E close to the market median. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We've established that MYS Group maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider market forecast, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
