Usually, when one insider buys stock, it might not be a monumental event. But when multiple insiders are buying like they did in the case of National Vision Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:EYE), that sends out a positive message to the company's shareholders.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

National Vision Holdings Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The Independent Chairman David Peeler made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$491k worth of shares at a price of US$14.45 each. That means that even when the share price was higher than US$12.22 (the recent price), an insider wanted to purchase shares. It's very possible they regret the purchase, but it's more likely they are bullish about the company. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. It is generally more encouraging if they paid above the current price, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels.

While National Vision Holdings insiders bought shares during the last year, they didn't sell. Insider Ownership

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It appears that National Vision Holdings insiders own 2.0% of the company, worth about US$19m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About National Vision Holdings Insiders?

The fact that there have been no National Vision Holdings insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us. But insiders have shown more of an appetite for the stock, over the last year. Insiders own shares in National Vision Holdings and we see no evidence to suggest they are worried about the future. Of course, the future is what matters most.
