Mosaic Insiders Sell US$1.5m Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution

モザイクの内部者が150万米ドルの株を売却し、慎重さを示す可能性があります

Over the past year, many The Mosaic Company (NYSE:MOS) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Mosaic

The Senior VP & Chief Administrative Officer, Walter Precourt, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$1.1m worth of shares at a price of US$28.01 each. So we know that an insider sold shares at around the present share price of US$25.73. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. Given that the sale took place at around current prices, it makes us a little cautious but is hardly a major concern.

Mosaic insiders didn't buy any shares over the last year. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. If you want to know exactly who sold, for how much, and when, simply click on the graph below!

Does Mosaic Boast High Insider Ownership?

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It appears that Mosaic insiders own 0.7% of the company, worth about US$55m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.

So What Do The Mosaic Insider Transactions Indicate?

It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded Mosaic shares in the last quarter. We don't take much encouragement from the transactions by Mosaic insiders. The modest level of insider ownership is, at least, some comfort. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
