While not a mind-blowing move, it is good to see that the Shenma Industry Co.Ltd (SHSE:600810) share price has gained 29% in the last three months. But that cannot eclipse the less-than-impressive returns over the last three years. After all, the share price is down 33% in the last three years, significantly under-performing the market.

While the last three years has been tough for Shenma IndustryLtd shareholders, this past week has shown signs of promise. So let's look at the longer term fundamentals and see if they've been the driver of the negative returns.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During five years of share price growth, Shenma IndustryLtd moved from a loss to profitability. We would usually expect to see the share price rise as a result. So it's worth looking at other metrics to try to understand the share price move.

The modest 1.7% dividend yield is unlikely to be guiding the market view of the stock. The company has kept revenue pretty healthy over the last three years, so we doubt that explains the falling share price. We're not entirely sure why the share price is dropped, but it does seem likely investors have become less optimistic about the business.

We know that Shenma IndustryLtd has improved its bottom line lately, but what does the future have in store? You can see what analysts are predicting for Shenma IndustryLtd in this interactive graph of future profit estimates.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Shenma IndustryLtd, it has a TSR of -26% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

Shenma IndustryLtd shareholders gained a total return of 4.3% during the year. But that return falls short of the market. On the bright side, the longer term returns (running at about 5% a year, over half a decade) look better. It may well be that this is a business worth popping on the watching, given the continuing positive reception, over time, from the market. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with Shenma IndustryLtd , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
