Inly Media Co., Ltd. (SHSE:603598) Surges 39% Yet Its Low P/S Is No Reason For Excitement

Inly Media Co., Ltd. (SHSE:603598) は39%急騰しましたが、その低いP/Sは興奮する理由にはなりません。

Despite an already strong run, Inly Media Co., Ltd. (SHSE:603598) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 39% in the last thirty days. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 10% in the last twelve months.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, Inly Media may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1x, since almost half of all companies in the Media industry in China have P/S ratios greater than 3.8x and even P/S higher than 7x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Inly Media's Recent Performance Look Like?

The revenue growth achieved at Inly Media over the last year would be more than acceptable for most companies. Perhaps the market is expecting this acceptable revenue performance to take a dive, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as Inly Media's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 22% gain to the company's top line. Despite this strong recent growth, it's still struggling to catch up as its three-year revenue frustratingly shrank by 5.0% overall. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 13% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.

In light of this, it's understandable that Inly Media's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. However, we think shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent revenue trends are already weighing down the shares.

What We Can Learn From Inly Media's P/S?

Even after such a strong price move, Inly Media's P/S still trails the rest of the industry. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

It's no surprise that Inly Media maintains its low P/S off the back of its sliding revenue over the medium-term. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.
