Stocks closed down slightly on Thursday after starting the new year with early morning gains.
At 4:01 p.m. ET, the $Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI.US)$ preliminarily closed down 0.35%, while the $S&P 500 Index (.SPX.US)$ fell -0.22%. $Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC.US)$ also declined, falling 0.16%.
$Apple (AAPL.US)$ dragged the market down with a 3% drop. $Tesla (TSLA.US)$ slid 6% after announcing a decline in annual deliveries for 2024 while $NVIDIA (NVDA.US)$ gained 2.4%, partially offsetting the losses from other Big Tech stocks.
Bitcoin moved higher, above $97,000, after ending 2024 on a losing streak.
The holiday-shortened week has seen limited economic data, but Thursday's jobless claims report revealed a week-over-week decline in both initial and continuing unemployment claims.
